Phone tap scare grips state babus

GANDHINAGAR: There is a reason why every officer and politician worth his salt is carrying two cellphones these days.

The word has gone around that Big Boss has stepped up his electronic surveillance in an election year and the entire Who’s Who of Gujarat is under observation.

The news of some sophisticated Israeli phone-tapping equipment being installed to make the job of intelligence agencies easy and a Bangalore-based firm giving technical expertise to the police on this matter have been doing the rounds for some time.

But the fear of being under watch has never been so intense as it is now. Officers and politicians can be seen carrying two cellphones, the second one recently acquired and the number known to only a trusted few.
