This is in response to Chuck Goudie’s article on teenage texting. Goudie says, “Once upon a time it was easy to eavesdrop on your teenagers and check their pockets or backpacks for incriminating notes.” Maybe. But it’s not too difficult to do some electronic eavesdropping.

Cell phone service providers often offer a plan for parents of teens in which it is remarkably easy to see whom your kid is texting or calling and at what hours.

Our plan allows us to turn our teen’s cell phone off for certain hours (let’s say, the middle of the night). Another tool is a calling circles plan, which allows unlimited calls only to certain numbers that your teen would pick – such as home, our cell phones, a few friends, and the significant other.

Los defensores de derechos humanos en Colombia sufren una “gigantesca e ilegal operación” de espionaje por parte de varios organismos del Estado, denunciaron ONG este jueves ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH).

La denuncia fue hecha durante una audiencia en Washington, en la que la representación del Estado colombiano se retiró alegando erorres procesales de la comisión.

“Se genera una gigantesca e ilegal operación de inteligencia” contra los defensores de derechos humanos, que “compromete a todas las agencias del Estado y no exclusivamente al DAS (servicio de inteligencia)”, dijo Reinaldo Villalba, del Colectivo de Abogados José Alvear Restrepo (CCAJAR).

El DAS, que ha estado en el centro de recientes escándalos por denuncias de vigilancia a varios sectores, principalmente líderes opositores, creó un grupo dedicado específicamente a los defensores, contra quienes desató “una persecución ilegal y sistemática”, dijo Villalba.

(CBS) Most of us carry a cell phone to stay in touch. But, as CBS News Science and Technology correspondent Daniel Siebergreports, you might be surprised to learn just how easy it is to violate your privacy or even trick you.

A high-profile publicist is accused of hacking into the voice mail of some other women, including one who dated her ex-boyfriend.

Former Dolce & Gabbana publicist Ali Wise is accused of hacking into the voice mail of a romantic rival after the woman started dating Wise’s ex-boyfriend.

Wise used free software called “SpoofCard” to gain access to the voice mails. The program also lets you disguise your voice and make it appear as though you’re calling from a different number.

Wise’s lawyer, Ed Kratt, told CBS: “SpoofCard is readily available on the Internet to anybody who wants to use it. One of the issues is whether Ali realized what she was doing was unlawful and the answer to that is clearly she did not.”

Celebrities have also been tempted by SpoofCard; one case involved Lindsay Lohan.

“A few years back, Paris Hilton was using our technology to access a whole bunch of Hollywood celebrity’s voicemail, including Lindsay Lohan, and we had to terminate her account for misusing it,” said Meir Cohen, who makes SpoofCards.

Cohen said users must sign an agreement not to use the service illegally.

“Is this encouraging people to break the law?” Sieberg asked.

“I would not say so,” Cohen responded. “I think anything can be used maliciously, but it’s all in the hands of the user.”

Wise faces up to four years in prison for felony computer trespassing and eavesdropping.

Sieberg explained that this technology allows you to trick people into thinking you are calling from another number.

To protect your voice mail from being hacked, Sieberg suggested setting up a password on your voice mail – even if you are calling from your own phone.

How safe is the Internet today? Do you think your own personal data is safeguarded? If you have a website, do you think it can’t be hacked? Well, if you’re Adrian Lamo, you know the answer is simple: absolutely nothing is safe.

Lamo knows this from deep personal experience. He gained his own measure of fame back in 2001 and 2002 as a computer hacker. He allegedly accessed the databases of the largest companies in the world (Bank of America, Yahoo!, McDonalds, Citigroup) and quickly racked up an impressive track record as someone who would break into a corporate system and then let the “hackee” know about it. All of this came to a screeching halt in September, 2003 when he surrendered to the FBI and was sentenced to 2 years probation for computer crimes involving Microsoft and The New York Times.

Located now in the Bay Area, Lamo is a working journalist who is frequently called upon to give speeches at security conventions and various “cybecrime” gatherings. He likes to open each appearance by giving out to everyone in attendance his own Social Security number. The message here is clear: if we think that one of the “sacred cows” of our personal data is protected on the Web, then we are all just fooling ourselves.

Credit card security? There are underground websites where stolen credit card numbers can be bought and used. Two years ago, the going price for a number was $5 per card. Today, an enterprising hacker can pick up a number for a mere 50 cents. It’s the classic case of supply and demand, and in the rapidly expanding world of Internet crime, there’s a whole lot of supply.

Lamo may soon become an ever bigger celebrity if a movie – Hackers Wanted – is ever released. The film was backed by some big names in Hollywood – Kevin Spacey’s company produced it and Spacey himself is the narrator. There’s a trailer for viewing online courtesy of the Eye Crave Network (scroll down to find the clip) but that’s all you can see. The documentary is tied up in internal squabbles that are common in the movie industry and there is no timeframe for when it will be released for viewing by a mass audience.

The film company missed a huge opportunity. Chances are good that if they released the picture over Halloween, it would be one of the most frightening films available in theaters today.

Sound recordings of the phone conversations of a number of prominent figures from various circles — including the prime minister, Cabinet members, journalists and mayors — have been found on CDs seized in a recent police raid at the offices of the Aydınlık newsweekly, as part of the investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine organization charged with plotting to overthrow the government.

Police raided the offices of Ulusal Kanal TV station and the Aydınlık newsweekly — a publication put out by the Workers’ Party (İP), whose leader, Doğu Perinçek, is an Ergenekon suspect — over alleged links to the criminal network on Monday. The police reportedly acted on the Aydınlık’s latest cover story, which included a 2004 phone conversation between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) President Mehmet Ali Talat, on the suspicion that Ergenekon had wiretapped Erdoğan. Police found recordings of phone conversations Erdoğan had between 1999 and 2004 on a CD seized during the raid.

There were also recordings of İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş; Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek; ministers Ali Babacan, Hilmi Güler, Egemen Bağış and Cemil Çiçek; businessman Remzi Gür; former UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto; aide to Prime Minister Erdoğan Cüneyd Zapsu; and journalists Murat Yetkin and Hakan Aygün.

Additionally, documents seized in a police raid in March at the home of Mustafa Özbek, the jailed chairman of workers’ union Türk Metal, revealed that the Ergenekon terrorist organization established two main centers in the KKTC and Ankara to wiretap conversations, including those of politicians and businessmen. Özbek was arrested in late January as part of the ongoing investigation into Ergenekon, which stands accused of multiple assassinations and attacks designed to trigger an eventual military takeover, working through its links to the state, including the military, the judiciary and the media.

La irregularidad se descubrió en un procedimiento judicial

El ministro de Economía, Ricardo López Murphy; su segundo, el secretario de Hacienda, Daniel Artana, y el secretario de Defensa de la Competencia y del Consumidor, Carlos Winograd, tienen intervenidos ilegalmente los teléfonos que utilizan en el ministerio.

Estas pinchaduras, realizadas con tecnología de última generación, fueron detectadas ayer en un procedimiento de más de cuatro horas que la Justicia ordenó para controlar la central telefónica del Palacio de Hacienda.

El titular del juzgado federal Nº 4, Rodolfo Canicoba Corral, investiga una denuncia penal impulsada por el ex ministro de Economía José Luis Machinea cuando a pocos días de asumir los técnicos del ministerio descubrieron que 21 de las 33 líneas telefónicas estaban intervenidas.

Estas escuchas fueron neutralizadas más tarde, al instalarse un sistema de protección telefónica que evitó que desde el exterior pudieran grabarse las conversaciones en los despachos.

Sin embargo, la red de espionaje no sólo continuó conectada sino que mejoró su capacidad técnica. Al revisar ayer la totalidad de los teléfonos, los funcionarios judiciales se encontraron con otra sorpresa: cuatro líneas (dos directas) que pertenecen a López Murphy habían sido interceptadas en forma irregular.

También lo fueron los teléfonos de sus dos secretarios. En el Palacio de Hacienda restaron importancia al procedimiento judicial, al que calificaron de operativo de “rutina”.

“Todos sabemos acá que los teléfonos están pinchados”, minimizaron el episodio voceros del área. Ayer, el nerviosismo no estaba centrado en los “ruidos” telefónicos, sino en los que pudiera producir el anuncio de hoy de las medidas económicas.

Según informaron a La Nación fuentes que participaron de este operativo, los instrumentos hallados son todos de tecnología digital, de última generación (aparato STG-BIOS, modelo TDM 99904230).

Lo novedoso es que se pudo individualizar el cable de fibra óptica que había sido utilizado para pinchar los teléfonos. Los expertos opinaron que, con ayuda de Telefónica de Argentina, este elemento permitiría conocer la procedencia del espionaje.

Un cable idéntico se encontró en la Secretaría de Inteligencia (SIDE) en un procedimiento judicial dispuesto por el juez Jorge Urso.

Este tipo de material, entre otras bondades, posibilita el transporte de una gran cantidad de líneas intervenidas (hasta 2000). En ese flujo habrían aparecido otras líneas de la zona de Plaza de Mayo.
Más sospechas

La sospecha es que el Ministerio de Economía no es el único organismo interceptado por los hackers telefónicos. Ayer trascendió que un operativo similar se había realizado hace unos días en la Casa Rosada, con resultados también similares, aunque no pudo conocerse el nombre de los funcionarios perjudicados.

Pasado el mediodía, una delegación integrada por una decena de funcionarios judiciales, policiales y técnicos llegó al 1er. piso del edificio de la calle Hipólito Yrigoyen con computadoras especializadas para inspeccionar líneas de teléfonos.

El grupo estaba compuesto por empleados judiciales, miembros de la Policía Federal, de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional (UTN) y de la Comisión Nacional de Comunicaciones (CNC). El ingeniero en telecomunicaciones Claudio Garbarz concurrió en representación del ministerio como responsable de la seguridad telefónica.

En el acta, que fue firmada al finalizar el procedimiento, se dejó constancia de todas las irregularidades aparecidas en los teléfonos discados. Estas anomalías se leyeron en una pantalla como una sucesión de números y letras. Después de que se retiró la comisión judicial, las escuchas fueron bloqueadas con el mismo mecanismo que existía. Si bien esta causa judicial por un delito contra la seguridad pública se originó por una denuncia del antecesor de López Murphy, los equipos interceptores localizados ahora aumentaron su calidad de captación. Hace un año, el canal transmisor tenía capacidad para pinchar apenas 30 líneas y no se había utilizado fibra óptica.

El instrumental digital de marca AST correspondía a la empresa que es proveedora exclusiva de la agencia norteamericana National Security Agency (NSA), el organismo que reemplazó a la CIA en el espionaje telefónico.

De todas formas, los funcionarios de Economía no pudieron establecer el origen de esta conexión ilegal.

Para contrarrestar esta situación, los técnicos del ministerio instalaron un sistema de protección que consiste en bombardear con un virus telefónico el equipo interceptor, que impide las escuchas ilegales.

La existencia de pinchaduras telefónicas volvió a quedar en evidencia, hace unas semanas, cuando la diputada Elisa Carrió (UCR-Chaco) denunció que sus teléfonos particular y celular estaban intervenidos.

Por este tema, la legisladora que investiga el lavado de dinero en la Argentina fue citada a declarar al Congreso, donde se estudia una postergada ley para regular el uso legal de las escuchas.
