Nokia Symbian deal winners and losers

symbian465.jpg

After an expansion phase that saw the introduction of the iPhone, Android, LiMo, and JavaFX Mobile, the mobile phone platform landscape is shrinking again. Nokia today announced it plans to spend $410 million to acquire the pieces of Symbian Ltd. that it doesn’t already own, and then give it away as open source under the Eclipse Public License. If that weren’t enough, they got several of their competitors to chip in their own front-end assets and join a new Symbian Foundation that will provide overall governance to the combined project.

Nokia Buys Symbian, Takes the Mobile OS Open-Source

Google and Apple aren’t the only corporate giants intent on shaking up the wireless industry. Nokia announced Monday night that it is acquiring software maker Symbian — the company was already a minority stock holder — and releasing its mobile operating system under an open-source license.

The mobile hardware manufacturer, which uses Symbian software across it’s range of extremely popular S60 devices, is also establishing the Symbian Foundation, a collective of hardware and software companies who have pledged to donate code and resources to Symbian’s development. Phone makers Motorola and Sony Ericsson are on board. Among others, carriers NTT DoCoMo and AT&T and hardware component maker Texas Instruments have pledged support.

By Open Sourcing Symbian, Nokia Kicks Off the Mobile Age

The mobile software age is here.

Symbian co-founder Nokia announced Monday night that it is buying the 52 percent of the software maker that it doesn’t already own and releasing its mobile operating system under an open source license.

With that move, Symbian joins two other major platforms — the Google-backed Android operating system and Apple’s OS X iPhone — that give programmers tools for creating and deploying software for smartphones.

The Symbian OS dominates the world market, with about 60 percent of the installed base among smartphones.
