A recent article in the London Review of Books revealed that a number of private companies now sell off-the-shelf data-mining solutions to government spies interested in analyzing mobile-phone calling records and real-time location information. These companies include ThorpeGlen, VASTech, Kommlabs, and Aqsacom–all of which sell “passive probing” data-mining services to governments around the world.

ThorpeGlen, a U.K.-based firm, offers intelligence analysts a graphical interface to the company’s mobile-phone location and call-record data-mining software. Want to determine a suspect’s “community of interest“? Easy. Want to learn if a single person is swapping SIM cards or throwing away phones (yet still hanging out in the same physical location)? No problem.

Researchers expect hackers to prey on cell phones (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO – Some of the most vicious Internet predators are hackers who infect thousands of PCs with special viruses and lash the machines together into “botnets” to pump out spam or attack other computers.

Now security researchers say cell phones, and not just PCs, are the next likely conscripts into the automated armies.

The mobile phone as zombie computer is one possibility envisioned by security researchers from Georgia Tech in a new report coming out Wednesday.

The report identifies the growing power of cell phones to open a new avenue of attack for hackers. Of particular concern is that as cell phones get more computing power and better Internet connections, hackers can capitalize on vulnerabilities in mobile-phone operating systems or Web applications.

“El Gobierno debe prestar atención a las empresas que realizan ‘chuponeo'” (Spanish)

El analista político Santiago Pedraglio advirtió que, así como hoy se utilizan audios indebidamente obtenidos para denunciar actos de corrupción, las empresas detrás de estas grabaciones podrían usarlas con otros fines en el futuro, por lo que solicitó una mayor atención del Gobierno en este tema.

Según material difundido por el programa Cuarto Poder, de América Televisión, Alberto Quimper (ex directivo de Perú-Petro) y Rómulo León Alegría (ex ministro aprista) habrían realizado negociaciones y tratos irregulares para favorecer a la empresa Discover Petroleum en el reciente proceso de adjudicación de lotes petroleros a cargo de Perupetro.

“En la práctica no hay un Servicio de Inteligencia Nacional, se ha privatizado la “inteligencia”. Al margen de lo que revelan estas grabaciones, son muy peligrosas. (…) El Gobierno debería evitar que esto pase”, dijo a Perú21.pe.

Pedraglio habló sobre la necesidad de desaparecer la “inteligencia privada” en el Perú, tras reiterar que “mañana los audios podrían ser utilizados en otras actividades, según el antojo de las empresas detrás del ‘chuponeo’”

Ministro de Defensa asegura que en las FFAA no se practica “chuponeo” (Spanish)

El ministro de Defensa, Ántero Flores Aráoz, aclaró que las Fuerzas Armadas no practican en absoluto la interceptación telefónica al señalar que en un régimen democrático como el actual no existe el llamado “chuponeo telefónico” en la institución.
“En las Fuerzas Armadas no hay chuponeo, lo haya habido antes no lo sé, no puedo garantizar que no lo haya habido, pero ahora no hay. En un régimen democrático, nada de esto existe dentro de las FFAA”, insistió.

Recordó, sin embargo, que los equipos que utilizó el antiguo Servicio Nacional de Inteligencia (SIN) tienen un paradero desconocido.
“Nadie sabe donde están esos equipos, puede ser que esté en manos de particulares o que ex miembros del SIN los tengan en su poder”, estimó.

Juan Luis Cipriani en contra del “chuponeo” telefónico (Spanish)

Lima (Peru.com).- El cardenal Juan Luis Cipriani dijo que tan grave y condenable como los actos de corrupción denunciados esta semana son las grabaciones ilegales de las conversaciones privadas, porque esto significa que “el fin justifica los medios”.

Dijo que nadie debe jugar a ser Dios escuchando conversaciones privadas, y recordó que él mismo habría sido víctima de la práctica ilegal del chuponeo.

Recuerdo en los años antiguos como mi teléfono, mi fax, eran objeto frecuente no se si de intento o de chuponeo, luego cuando decías algo te explicaban que no, que estos mecanismos eran antiguos, que no se podía, que tenías un delirio de persecución, y eran tiempos después del año 2000, no eran tan antiguos, manifestó en su programa Diálogos de fe de RPP Noticias.

Transparencia: Ministerio del Interior debe garantizar que no haya más ‘chuponeo’ (Spanish)

El secretario técnico de la Asociación Civil Transparencia, Percy Medina, manifestó hoy que el Ministerio del Interior debe garantizar que no se sigan realizando interceptaciones telefónicas a los ciudadanos en general, y solicitó a las autoridades que no minimicen un acto tan grave como el “chuponeo” al teléfono del periodista Juan Paredes Castro, editor central del diario El Comercio.

Apple iPhone Vulnerabilities Disclosed

The first is a URL display flaw in the iPhone’s Mail that could allow an attacker to send a message containing a malicious URL that looks legitimate, says one security researcher.

Questions arise on Skype snooping

NEW YORK (AP) — A Canadian researcher has discovered that a Chinese version of eBay Inc.’s Skype communications software snoops on text chats that contain certain keywords, including “democracy.”

Skype, the Hong Kong version of which is seen, is difficult to wiretap, but security questions are being raised.

The revelation is not only of interest to rights groups that monitor Internet censorship. The discovery also likely intrigues law enforcement and intelligence agencies in other countries, because they have been bothered by the growing use of Skype, which claims 338 million users across the world.

By its very nature, Skype is difficult to wiretap. Skype routes calls and chats between computers over the Internet, avoiding traditional phone networks. And the contents are supposedly encrypted, raising concerns in law enforcement that Skype could let criminals communicate without fear of eavesdropping.

Report: Skype Helped China Snoop on Users

In China, nothing is private. As if we needed more proof, a Canadian group has spotted a bank of unsecured servers containing what appear to be filtered-out information from Skype messages that might run afoul of Chinese censors — terms such as “Falun Gong” and “Taiwan independence.”
